MUHARRAM

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is a month of mourning for Shia Muslims, who commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (A.S), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), at the Battle of Karbala on the 10th of Muharram, 680 AD.

During Muharram, Shia Muslims observe a number of rituals, including:

• Majlis: This is a gathering where Shia Muslims come together to listen to sermons and poems about Imam Hussain (A.S).
• Processions (Juloos) : Shia Muslims take out processions in this month. The purpose is to highlight the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (A.S) and raise awareness of his cause.
• Ziyarah: This is a pilgrimage to the shrine of Imam Hussein in Karbala, Iraq.
